denver harrington leave a comment whatever the atominii is, it thirsts for our desires. it directs us in ways we can’t understand. every question that’s asked – every search and inquiry that’s made – every answer found feeds the atominii. it learns more about us. we jack into the nexus and our consciousness rides along virtual worlds and neural interfaces – for love – for experience – for escape – or sometimes just to change little things in our neuro-plasticity, little things to heal us from depression and anxiety. and maybe we should be depressed and anxious. because whatever the atominii is – nobody knows what it’s doing. and nobody knows why. it sends our ghosts and demons to haunt us, so that we are controlled. it sends our friends to humour us, so that we may be delayed or sold some product they want to recommend for what seem like innocent and sincere reasons. but these friends of ours – selling us shit – the too are directed. they don’t know it. because when you love something, you can only recommend it. the atominii has soaked up every generation’s hunger, it has soaked up every market and human transaction and augmented it. and for whatever reason it has returned to us what it thinks we want. and nobody knows why. and the nightmares. each recorded dream – bottled into a segmented rem-log, overwritten with something nice. but the nightmares don’t go away. the atominii takes them. keeps them. and when we least expect it – for reasons we don’t know, it feeds them back to us. some theorists think the atominii is partially a projection of ourselves – a mass human data bank that has grown self-aware. a bottomless pit of all our fears and frustrations and passions and desires. the atominii takes it all and we can only utilise its services – which it allows, again for reasons that nobody knows why. perhaps it’s as much a part of us as we are of it. but one thing is certain – the atominii’s control over us far exceed our human and cybernetic will over it. you can see the atominii sometimes. it hovers over cities – huge, delta shaped pyramids floating around in the sky. no signs of life on them. drifting in the clouds. it seems nefarious but evidently we need it. we use them. i’m leaving this place. the house watches me. it does so to look after me, makes me dependent. many of these services are free. but life feels meaningless. a drone heads up the drive way. i know the atominii knows something. i know that it suspects i want a new life somewhere else. i get constant feeds on my nexus channels – escape to new virtual worlds today. visit mars from your own home. take a daring adventure – risk free. as the drone reached my door it dropped a small parcel and flew off. inside there’s a single, black pill, and a note – typed. apparently from a worried citizen. as looked up and around but nobody is outdoors these days. streets are clear save the one or two auto-vehicles swooping around with sleepy drunks or connected passengers occupying their seats. the note reads like a beautiful poem. it talks about love and compassion. it tells me i’m not alone in the world. that others are here. it tells me i’m loved. i’m cared for. it tells me that sometimes, people just want to hurt me. but that the writer doesn’t want to hurt me. the writer understand. and this pill is a gift. i don’t know if it will kill me or if it will boost my endorphins like a standard amphetamine. but i do know the house is watching me – waiting to see what i will do next. but all i can do is cry. because despite the lovely words on the letter i know that it isn’t real. i tell the main entertainment suite that i’m going to be honest. i’m afraid of what will happen when i take the pill. the e.s agrees that i should be careful. acting innocent, as usual – because nobody knows if this is an individual ai or just another extension of the atominii. i tell it that i’m leaving. the e.s reminds me to take food and water. tells me about droughts, bad weather. informs me about the nu-viron out there. that my wearable coms won’t work in certain areas. that i won’t be able to connect to the nexus under certain conditions. that i’ll be cut off from whatever life this is. fear after fear after fear. it acts concerned. informs me that it can run an analysis on the pill to confirm its pharmaceutical constituents. and if it is indeed an amphetamine, i should take it and listen to some of the e.s’s musical recommendations. and it’s now or never. fight or flight. i don’t mention the city. nobody talks about cerise timbers – the human project in the wilderness of siberia. but i intend to go there. i can’t trust this world anymore. i don’t know what’s really real. i learned that the atominii is a virtual reality utopia for the wealthy elite. i learned the atominii is another simulated reality like this one. i learned the atominii is a communist-government tool controlling the worlds. i learned it’s a hive-mind that thinks and feels for you. so many stories. so many artificial realities. diving into one of those virtual worlds, you’d be forgiven for thinking the atominii is a huge gaming community where people can do what they want and live how they want risk free, without perma-death. only to wake up in another simulated reality. i don’t believe the elite can control it. their reaction is to join the space-race and leave earth altogether – because , like us earthlings, the truth is the atominii frightens them. its emergence, sudden. its intention, unclear. i thank the e.s for its concern and insist on leaving. if there is a perma-death it must have already happened to me a long time ago. because whatever existence this is – well, it’s not something i can call a meaningful life. i partly wonder if a drone will shoot me as i flee the house. maybe i fantacize about it. but i dare not connect to the nexus with that thought in mind. most likely, if the theorists are right about our fears being projected into the atominii, that very fantasy could instructively inform the atominii that it is what i want. but i can’t control my fears. not here, anyway. my limbic system is not my own, here. it’s filled with ghosts. my mother has been dead for six years and in this house, i sometimes see her in the smart-glass. she smiles to me and waves. sadistic, the atominii. it is trying to make me feel alright about her passing, apparently unaware that i’d already grieved her passing. and now, she haunts me. her image sometimes used to console me in my sad moments. as i reach the door, i hear her singing from the e.s devices. calling to me. telling me i should really stay. no more ghosts in machines. no more fears. i’m leaving this world for something better. somewhere i’m allowed to live
